PairPuri Vol 2 Tezuka x Shiraishi
PairPuri cross talk. Okiayu Ryoutarou x Hosoya Yoshimisa [pg.28-31]

Scans thanks to Sai the Shaman! I didn't include pics of the seiyuu as reference. Do look in the original scans if any of you want to see how they look like. :D The quotes on their pictures are quotes taken from what they say here, if anyone's wondering. Hosoya is so talkative, hehe.

Okiayu Ryoutarou (Tezuka Kunimitsu) x Hosoya Yoshimasa (Shiraishi Kuranosuke)

The first discussion between the two who hold the position of captain of Seigaku and Shitenhouji! What are their images of Tezuka and Shiraishi? Never before revealed episodes will be revealed here!!

As the seiyuu of these characters, what kind of character do you think Tezuka and Shiraishi are?

Okiayu: It's been a while since the original series has started, but I get the feeling that other members see him as the captain and acknowledge his presence. That's Tezuka. He's someone who doesn't only work at it by himself but rather walks the path with everyone. His presence is absolute, but he respects everyone properly. I believe that Tezuka is truly the captain.

Hosoya: It's true! In the recording studio, I feel like I'm actually watching Seigaku's members. When Okiayu-san enters, everyone naturally braces themself.

Okiayu: That's totally not true. (laughs)

Hosoya: More than Seigaku's captain, he feels like the chairman of all of Tenipuri. Even when he doesn't speak, he immediately changes the atmosphere. I feel that they're connected by strong bonds of trust, and I started thinking that captains should all be like that.

Okiayu: Speaking of that, there was a long period of time when Tezuka didn't show up in the TV series, but when I occassionally appeared at the studio, I never felt that my place disappeared. I just take the spot I always take in the recording room. I again realized that "I will always have a place here." That aside, Shiraishi only started appearing in the OVAs, yet he is really popular. What do you think of Shiraishi?

Hosoya: When I received Shiraishi's role, I kept thinking about him.I thought that if his match with Fuji continued, he might even lose and that Shiraishi himself might be thinking this, so I should express him with this kind of feeling (1). I tried understanding things about Shiraishi one by one. I also thought that Shiraishi might quit tennis after the semifinals...

Okiayu: Eh~!

Hosoya: Because he wants to win as the captain, he plays solidly and follows the basics, but I wondered if he himself was enjoying it. I thought that he might want to play a more relaxing tennis in the end and become a pharmacist in the future...

Okiayu: Heh~! How impressive. (laughs)

Hosoya: When I read the parts where he was drawn and his lines, I started thinking that things might turn out that way. I got the feeling that as the captain, Shiraishi put his club members before him and kept himself back by a notch. Shintenhouji members aren't the type to follow orders, so as the captain, Shiraishi physically shows how he can get results and draws them out that way.

Okiayu: Both let the members run their own course. All the schools have strong individual personalities, so the captains' presence isn't one that exists to reprimand the other members.

Please tell us all about the atmosphere during recording.

Okiayu: The OVA starts with the drawing for the Nationals tournament. (2) In the manga, Tezuka feels like he just got off the plane, but in the anime, he just feels like he's late. (laughs)

Hosoya: Ah! Okiayu-san actually did come late for that! Okiayu-san was wearing black jeans and a white sweater at that time...

Okiayu: Eh, how do you remember that! (laughs)

Hosoya: Well... (laughs) That was my first recording and my first time meeting Okiayu-san. And then I heard your voice and thought "I've heard this voice before!" It was that memorable. (laughs)

Okiayu: So it was like that.

Hosoya: Truthfully, the Shitenhouji members were rarely all at the recordings together during the OVA, but it was great that 6 of us were able to gather together for the Teni Festa. It really shows that the Seigaku members get along well. The studio is always like a comedy live...

Okiayu: Um...it's not everyone? (laughs) Isn't it just Onosaka-san and Naru-kun? (laughs)

Hosoya: Both of them do have heated roles. (laughs)

What caught your attention from Tezuka and Shiraishi's profiles?

[While looking at the characters' profiles...]

Hosoya: For me, it's the fact that Tezuka keeps a journal. Does he loquaciously tell his journal things he can't say outloud after all?

Okiayu: I feel that he would write about pointless, everyday things like "Today I ran one station. It felt good." (laughs) So, Shiraishi...health otaku. (laughs) I wonder what kind of health goods he has?

Hosoya: Ah, like maybe using a Tempur pillow lovingly when he goes to sleep! Or like, doing yoga after coming out of the baths. He'd get stiff shoulders, right? And, he's also a health committee member, so he must go to the infirmary? To change his bandages and such...

Okiayu: He must have a poison arm after all. (laughs)

Hosoya: (laughs)

[Looking at the history timeline next...]

Hosoya: He says this during the drawing for Nationals, but Shiraishi was watching Tezuka from somewhere last year. (3) Atobe and Sanada were also very concerned about Tezuka when he returned...

Okiayu: In the end (during the match) he lost though.

Hosoya: It's easy for other characters to view Tezuka as a rival.

Okiayu: Like I thought, Tezuka's strength was absolute since the beginning. Even the actors say this. The first impression he gives off is that of an impressive person, and he remains impressive. In contrast, there are also people who appear weak in the beginning but improve as they go along. Even in the Tenipuri world, those characters who met Tezuka for the first time at the beginning of middle school all felt Tezuka's absolute power.

Hosoya: I felt that Tezuka is someone that everyone can be. He's strong, but he's not pretentious about it. Even during matches, he looks into the pros beyond. And so everyone, because they want to see what Tezuka sees, they want to battle with Tezuka and find out.

Please tell us stories about the time of your auditions.

Okiayu: Mine was a tape audition. During a break when I was dubbing for a certain movie, I went to the office and quickly recorded. That Tezuka tape got me the role in one shot.

Hosoya: I was watching the Tenipuri TV series. At my work place, I started liking Tenipuri...

[Talk about his work continues for a while.]

Okiayu: Heh~. So you were in training school at that time?

Hosoya: Yes, I was in training school for around 1 year. I also recorded my audition on a tape. Actually, there was a drama at that time...is it all right if I backtrack a bit?

Okiayu: We're already off track. (laughs)

Hosoya: When I entered training school, there was a manager who always looked after me. Before that person quit the place, the last thing that person brought to me was an audition for Tenipuri.

Okiayu: I see. It's like returning the favor.

Hosoya: I feel like I was able to return the favor a bit. At that time, I auditioned for both Hirakoba and Shiraishi. For Hirakoba, it was on the Fuji-Kawamura match from the manga. I remember that I focused a lot on Hirakoba's appearances in the manga. The vision of him saying "How vast...Nationals" comes to mind.

Okiayu: It was good experience, wasn't it.

Hosoya: Yes! Ah, and outside of work...

Okiayu: Work again? (laughs)

Hosoya: I heared the results on a public phone outside of work. When I heard that I passed, I shouted in the lobby, "I really passed the auditions!" because I was super happy...

Okiayu: Is Shiraishi your first role?

Hosoya: Yes. I was happy while I worked...

Okiayu: Work again. (strained laugh)

Hosoya: And then I was nervous during the recording of the match against Fuji. I was wearing a black outfit...

Okiayu: Enough with the clothes! (laughs)

Hosoya: During the recording, Kaida-san really helped me calm down. The hardest part was making sounds when returning the ball. At first, I didn't know what kind of sound I was supposed to make.

Okiayu: Ah, I was stumped by that in the beginning too. Since he's a strong character, I don't want to make too much noise or sound too desperate or weak. But if you watch a real tennis match, the players make a lot of noise.

Hosoya: It's impressive. But if a cool character shouts out, it sounds like he's trying with utmost effort to return the shot. It's difficult after all. For me, one thing that damaged Shiraishi's character was the voice I used for him during his shouts. Another was my pronunciation of his "ecstasy." (laughs)

Okiayu: I see. (laughs)

Hosoya: At first, I used a normal pronunciation during the actual recording, but when we recorded again, the pronunciation turned out like this. I was really nervous about how to pronounce that. I remember everything...the outfit I was wearing at that time...

Okiayu: You remember too much! (laughs)

To spice up Shin Teni, please give us a message.

Okiayu: Because there are high schoolers this time around, we're the kouhai here. There are also unexpected young people involved, so readers will feel the novelty. And also because one side of this is an all stars story. By all means, turning this into an anime would be helpful. (laughs)

Hosoya: I also think that it would be great to turn this into an anime. And then, if there were a continuation of TeniFesta, we'd be able to go beyond the division of schools. The presentation of the event would change a lot.

Okiayu: I hope that this will continue in various forms.

PairPuri Cross Talk Column

[1] This kind of expression

This is about the expression that Shiraishi showed after his S3 match in the Nationals semifinals. Although he won over Fuji, he shows an unpleased expression that even revealed his teeth.

[2] The drawing for the Nationals Tournament

This is about the drawing for the middle school Nationals tournament that happened at Rikkai. Oishi did not know about Tezuka's return. Tezuka, who had just returned from Kyuushuu, most likely went directly to the drawing.

[3] Looking at Tezuka from somewhere.

Shiraishi: Oh, Tezuka-kun's aura increased since last year.

This results from the line that Shiraishi speaks when he sees Tezuka at the drawing. In actuality, Shiraishi went to the Kantou tournament the previous year and observed Tezuka's match.

Excuse me while I up my fangirl levels for Hosoya! I have adored this man from the start with his secy voice and even his appearance but this interview made me just crazy for him. I love how much thought he put into Shiraishi and even how he remembers every detail of recording. Shows how much he really cared for this role and it meant something to him.

I giggled so much over what Hosoya says here! He was so excited about his role. I can't believe it's his first role. Everything must have made a big impression on him.

Hosoya sure remembers a lot of things! He sounds super nice. And to think Shiraishi is his first work! o.o

It is really cool to read that the seiyuus think about their character, I think it gives more information about them. It's also nice to get info what happened in the studio when they were recording.

Thank you! ^^

This explains a big part (but not limited to, of course) of why I love Tezuka. <3 Strong but not pretentious about it. Definitely.
12th-Jan-2010 10:50 pm (UTC)
Hosoya sums it up pretty well! :3 Tezuka is definitely not pretentious. Far from it.

Why did I miss reading this? *smacks myself*

'Speaking of that, there was a long period of time when Tezuka didn't show up in the TV series, but when I occassionally appeared at the studio, I never felt that my place disappeared. I just take the spot I always take in the recording room. I again realized that "I will always have a place here."' - I love this! The seiyuus really turned into a family. So sweet.

And I fell for Hosoya-san all over again, ehehehehe... HE really gave justice to Shiraishi and didn't feel like he was his first job. Hnnnn, ECSTASY!

Thank you for translating!

So you could read it now! XD

I love what Okiayu-san said there!

And Hosoyan-san...I didn't know much about him before this, but now I'm keeping an eye out for him. XD

You're welcome! :)

Ah, you've got a point there.. ehehehe ^^

I always wonder how crazy they are when they're in the recording studio, all together. Must be really, really fun!

I really liked him during the TeniPuri Festa, so cute! Yes, we should keep our eyes open for him! *snickers*

It's surprising that a seiyuu who basically debuted in this series is already so good at singing... *listens to Shiraishi's songs*
2nd-Sep-2014 01:40 pm (UTC)
omg. Now I've pretty much become a Hosoyan fangirl. *falls over* He plays so many great characters in sports anime these days: Shiraishi (Tenipuri), Sousuke (Free!), Tetsu (Diamond no Ace), Asahi (Haikyuu), Souji (Baby Steps)...

I hope he gets many, MANY more sports roles in the future. I've become addicted to this genre now...
